One thing I really enjoy watching is competitions where people create things.
I’m not actually that interested in the competition itself. What fascinates me is watching people create, seeing the different approaches they take, and following their creative process.
One of my favorite shows is Blown Away, a glassblowing competition where the contestants create everything from intricate sculptures to large-scale installations in hot glass.
It’s really interesting to see how they approach their creative work.
One thing that happens in almost every episode is that something breaks. Sometimes it’s just a small detail, but sometimes it’s the main piece. And because they don’t have much time to complete their project, starting over usually isn’t an option. They have to make do with what they have.
So even when things don’t go according to plan, they pick up the pieces—sometimes literally—and pivot. More often than not, what they end up creating is even more impressive than their original vision.
I think that’s something all of us who create can learn from.
Things break. Things don’t work. Things change while we’re creating.
But instead of getting frustrated or starting over from scratch, maybe we should look at those moments as opportunities to make something even better.
Instead of fighting the change, incorporate it into your vision.
Who knows? The final result might turn out to be even better than the one you originally imagined.
