Anisha is the main character in the short story Being Killian. She may be the loneliest girl aboard the spaceship Stargazer.
She lives alone with her mother. Several years ago, Anisha became seriously ill, and after that her father moved away. Before everything changed, she loved kindergarten. But that was before.
Things were different after she recovered and returned to kindergarten. Nothing was the same anymore. Nobody wanted to play with her, and all the other children preferred a game they called Being Killian.
Anisha can’t play Being Killian because, according to the other children, you have to have long hair. During her illness, she had to cut hers off.
So she is nervous when she learns that they are actually going to visit the Killians on their home planet.
But not everything is as she expects, and not at all as the other children in kindergarten imagine.
In Being Killian, we find out along with Anisha that sometimes the very thing that makes you different can actually be a strength.
